DIY model railways

Most of the books and magazines about model railway building are aimed at experienced modellers, with very little thought for beginners. So, for beginners it is always best to start off with a simple pack that has something of everything to get you going.

If possible, it is a good idea to join a local modelling club – there you will get lots of advice and encouragement. But for now, here are some tips to get you going.

The first thing you need to consider is who the model for. If it is for children you are probably going to concentrate less on detail and realism. The model will have to be a bit more robust to withstand children playing with it. If the model is for an adult, then detail and realism are going to be much more important.

You will need to decide early on what gauge railway you will use. This is important because it will determine how your model develops over time. The gauge is basically the distance between the rails. If the space you have available is small you will need to go for a small gauge model. But, if you have a lot of free space for your railway model building, then go for a larger gauge.

Having chosen what gauge you will use, you can think about the layout. Most starter kits come with a simple oval track. While this may not be very realistic, it is a very good layout to start. Another simple, starter design, particularly for those with limited space is a straight layout.

Having got the basic issues sorted out, then you start thinking about the details, such as track length, the size and positioning of your station, the detail of the scenery, and that is where your creative side comes out.

Once you have mastered the basics, have started getting a handle on some of the jargon and basic skills, you are then ready to take your model railway building to a new level.
